Orofacial Myology Therapy
First, what is orofacial myology? It is defined by SR Holtzman as "the study and treatment of oral and facial muscles as they relate to speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health."
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are incorrect muscle function of the jaw, tongue and lips. They can include one or a combination of the following:
-
Tongue Thrust - an incorrect swallowing pattern. The tongue has an improper placement and function during swallowing.
-
Incorrect Lip/Tongue Resting Posture – includes open lip posture and low or forward tongue resting posture against the teeth.
-
Oral Habits – Thumb, finger or pacifier sucking habits beyond an appropriate age. Other oral habits include fingernail biting, lip biting, lip licking, and tongue sucking.
OMDs can negatively impact dental and facial growth patterns, slow orthodontic correction as well as impact speech patterns and appropriate placement of the tongue, lips and jaw.
Therapy will target tongue resting posture, teach a closed lips nasal breathing posture, and correct eating, drinking and swallowing patterns. Any speech sound articulation issues are addressed at the same time.
Therapy is provided in-clinic, scheduled to be 50 minutes long and frequency based on individual need.
